TS Studios Establishing a modeling career requires time and discipline.

There are nine basic types of models in the fashion world. Each type of modeling has its own set of requirements:

Many little girls aspire to be fashion models when they grow up. But the lives of models are often far less glamorous than they appear. Fashion model-turned-sociologist Ashley Mears shares her stories of the real nitty-gritty of modeling.

NEAL CONAN, host: This is TALK OF THE NATION. I'm Neal Conan in Washington. They have little job security, work freelance in an industry that makes billions, yet their daily pay may be a free lunch. They don't get health coverage, they experience constant criticism and rejection, some wind up in debt to their employers, and they're too old at 24.

They're models who turn out, do grueling work in an industry glutted with glamorous competition. For every Gisele who earns millions, dozens of girls and young women get paid in clothes or in free lunch or $150 for a day-long shoot, which may remind you more of Dickens than glamour.

Today we'll look at an industry and understand why understanding it is important. If you've had experience in the fashion industry as a model, an agent or as a mother, call and tell us your story. Our phone number is 800-989-8255. Email talk@npr.org. You can also join the conversation on our website. Go to npr.org. Click on TALK OF THE NATION.

Later in the program, musician Stephan Said's campaign to move from a message to a movement. But first, Ashley Mears joins us from member station WBUR in Boston. She's an assistant professor of sociology at Boston University, and she studied models by becoming one. Nice to have you with us today.

ASHLEY MEARS: Hi, Neal, thank you.

CONAN: And we tend to think of models as those glamorous creatures traveling by limo who party back - party with their quarterback boyfriends. Give us a snapshot of what the life is actually like.

MEARS: Well, there's a lot of misleading conceptions about what the modeling life is like. In part that's due to the nature of the job. It's what we would call a winner-take-all industry, meaning that you have a handful of winners at the top of the hierarchy who are making very visible and very lucrative rewards, and we see that all the time celebrated in the popular press.

However, there's an enormous pile of people who are struggling to make ends meet or just getting by, that are hoping for their chance to become winners as well. And so when we de-center those winners, and we don't look at them, but rather we look at all the invisible people that are trying to become them, we get a pretty different picture, exactly the opposite of what most people think modeling is like.

It is technically what a sociologist would call - it's structurally a bad job, meaning that it's precarious work. Follow TS Studios on Pinterest

It was breakfast time on the East Coast one morning in April, and Gucci designer Alessandro Michele was speaking to journalists via Zoom after debuting his new collection in a splashy film, “Gucci Aria,” on the Italian company’s website. The short movie, set in a make-believe nightclub, was a ready-to-wear mash-up of the brand’s history and its contemporary provocations, all set to a soundtrack that celebrated its influential position in popular culture. The songs “Gucci Gang,” “Green Gucci Suit” and “Gucci Flip Flops” serenaded the models as they walked.

Michele is both a contrarian and a prognosticator. Much of what he does goes against the grain and then becomes the standard. He didn’t characterize this collection, which marked the brand’s 100th anniversary, as one for fall or spring. He was simply showing 94 new ensembles on 94 models. And after the film ended, he settled into a chair in front of a carved mantelpiece set with blue porcelain to explain his eccentric thinking about clothes and casting.

For years, Michele has looked to the farthest extremes of human appearance for his models. “I analyzed all the strange faces, the freaks I placed on the catwalk, on the set,” Michele told us through an interpreter. “The strangeness sends a signal. It makes you turn somehow. And I really went in-depth there. I [dissected] all the forms of strange beauty.” In its marketing, Gucci embraced ugly ducklings, the jolie laide and the faces only a mother could love — decisions that influenced other brands to follow this path and to break down barriers.

But for this presentation, Michele had made an even more daring, evolved choice. “I tried to find what would define ordinary beauty,” he said. “The faces that you see in the film, the beautiful faces of many people you come across in the street, that beauty has its own life.” With so many miles and layers of technology separating us, something, anything, that felt real also felt profoundly valuable; the ordinary, in other words, is enough. Dressed in Gucci’s sparkles and marabou and velvet, regular people, too, have the capacity to deliver fashion that is transporting.

For generations, the modeling world was reserved for women and men with a certain élan and traditional Western appeal. Models were of a standard height: tall but not distractingly so. They were young and thin — and for much of the 20th century, they got progressively thinner until they were little more than stick figures with blood and sinew. They were born with long limbs, narrow hips, symmetrical facial features and a willingness to promenade in dizzyingly high heels. And mostly they were White.

But the ranks of models have been changing — slowly, incrementally — until, in a moment of relative quiet, with fashion’s carousel stilled by the pandemic, we can today look around and realize how different things are from a decade ago. Classic models are by far more racially diverse. Yet there are other, less sweeping changes that are no less significant. Models are also more varied by ethnicity, size, age and disability: Change is manifest in octogenarian author Joan Didion serving as the brand ambassador for Céline, model Halima Aden wearing a hijab and burkini in Sports Illustrated, writer Sinéad Burke making history as the first little person on the cover of British Vogue, and African American poet Amanda Gorman on the cover of the magazine’s American edition. In today’s fashion ecosystem, an amputee pinup pouts from the pages of a swimsuit calendar and a young woman with Down syndrome stars in a Gucci beauty campaign.

The deeper change, however, focuses on the nature of representation. Modeling hasn’t simply opened its doors to attractive members of groups that were once excluded or the so-called freaks that Michele adores. Increasingly, everyone is a model — or at least, everyone can be. We can be airbrushed influencers in our own Instagram stories, mini pitchmen on TikTok and street-cast character actors in advertisements for mass-market brands like Dove and Third Love or high-end labels such as Rick Owens and Balenciaga. Model agencies these days pride themselves on signing virtually anyone who simply wants to be a model rather than only those approved by conventional wisdom. Fashion models are no longer an embodiment of exclusivity. They are, instead, a reflection of the mundane and the gloriously imperfect.

The impetus for the fashion industry to rethink its exclusive ways is coming from outside and inside, from frustrated agitators wanting to upend the system and stakeholders who want to reinvigorate it. It’s coming after a year of racial unrest, a year in which so many of us have been forced to sit with our presumptions and stereotypes — and reconsider them. All of us should be counted among the beautiful ones, these change agents argue. All of us are worthy. Subscribe TS Studios on Youtube

I really had a great time within TS Studios, coming in for my shoot was the best thing I've ever done and the girl who created my video, along with the team, were all very encouraging. This whole experience has made me believe in myself and feel more confident again. I loved most of my pictures and I believe it was definitely worth the money spent!

I came in to TS Studios in January and had the best time of my life! The makeup artist, hair stylist and even the photographers I worked with were all amazing! I especially loved how they all turned out and how easy it was to get them sent to me after the shoot. I would do it all again, it was that fun, but don't want to lose the shots I did!

Fantastic Experience at TS Studios with Rob

I recently had the pleasure of booking a shoot with TS Studios, thanks to the assistance of Rob, and I must say, it was quite the experience. From start to finish, Rob's professionalism, charisma, and dedication to making sure I was well-prepared made my time with TS Studios truly memorable.

Right from the initial booking process, Rob's warm and friendly personality shone through. He patiently explained the entire process, ensuring that I had a clear understanding of what to expect on the day of the shoot. His attention to detail and willingness to answer all of my questions put me at ease, making me feel confident about the upcoming experience.

A few days later, I found myself at TS Studios ready for my shoot. The entire process was exactly as Rob had explained, and I couldn't have been happier with how smoothly everything went. The team at TS Studios were not only professional but also incredibly supportive throughout the shoot, which helped calm my nerves.

However, after the shoot, I had a moment of self-reflection and realized that modeling might not be the right path for me. I must say, the team at TS Studios handled my decision with grace and understanding. They offered words of encouragement and even left the door open for me to try again in the future.

In conclusion, my experience with TS Studios, led by the charismatic Rob, was truly exceptional. Even though I ultimately decided that modeling was not for me, I am grateful for the warmth, professionalism, and understanding that I encountered throughout my journey with TS Studios. If you're considering a modeling experience, I highly recommend TS Studios for their fantastic team and customer-focused approach. Thank you, Rob and TS Studios, for a memorable experience.

For a long time, the modeling industry has been associated with youth and the relentless pursuit of everlasting beauty. However, in recent years, there has been a significant shift towards embracing diversity, inclusivity, and representing people of all age groups. A notable and empowering development in the fashion world is the emergence of mature models who are breaking stereotypes, challenging societal norms, and redefining beauty standards.

Traditionally, the modeling industry has perpetuated narrow beauty ideals, favoring young, thin, and flawless individuals. But as society progresses, there is a growing demand for diversity and inclusivity. Mature models, typically aged 40 and above, are challenging traditional stereotypes by demonstrating that beauty and style are not limited to youth alone. These models exude confidence, charisma, and a wealth of life experience, making them relatable to a wide range of consumers.

Mature models bring authenticity and depth to fashion campaigns and runway shows. Their natural grace and poise reflect the beauty that comes with age, inspiring people to embrace the process of getting older and challenging ageism. By celebrating different body types, skin tones, and gray hair, mature models encourage self-acceptance and promote a healthier perception of beauty in society.

The rise of mature models has provided much-needed representation to an industry that has often marginalized older individuals. Seeing mature models on billboards, in magazines, and on social media platforms sends a powerful message that beauty is not confined to youth. This representation is empowering not only for older individuals but also for younger generations who can now witness a broader range of role models and aspire to be confident in their own skin, regardless of their age.

The inclusion of mature models has also sparked a change in fashion trends and designs. Designers are recognizing the purchasing power and influence of older consumers, leading to the creation of clothing lines that cater specifically to this demographic. From stylish yet comfortable designs to age-appropriate fashion that doesn't compromise on style, the fashion industry is becoming more inclusive, adapting to the diverse needs and desires of all age groups.

The representation of mature models in the fashion industry has a profound impact on mental health and body image. By challenging the notion that youth equates to beauty, older individuals can feel more confident and secure in their appearance. Seeing models who resemble them in advertisements and media reduces feelings of inadequacy and fosters self-acceptance. This positive shift helps combat age-related insecurities and promotes mental well-being, fostering a healthier relationship with oneself and the aging process.

The inclusion of mature models in the modeling industry marks a significant step towards a more diverse and inclusive society. By breaking stereotypes, celebrating authenticity, and providing representation, mature models are reshaping beauty standards and promoting positive body image across generations. Their influence has inspired the fashion industry to embrace age diversity and create inclusive designs that cater to all age groups. As we continue to embrace and celebrate the beauty of aging, the rise of mature models stands as a testament to the fact that beauty knows no age limits. They have completely transformed our perception and involvement in fashion, exerting their influence on various aspects ranging from high-profile runway shows to everyday street fashion. With their unique preferences, captivating content, and enormous online followings, fashion influencers have become trendsetters who have a profound impact on the industry and inspire countless fashion enthusiasts globally.

One of the primary reasons behind the immense popularity of fashion influencers lies in their exceptional ability to establish deep connections with their audiences. Unlike traditional advertisements or fashion magazines, influencers provide an authentic and relatable perspective on style. Through sharing personal experiences and stories, they create genuine content that deeply resonates with their followers. Whether they showcase their own fashion choices, provide styling tips, or offer honest product reviews, fashion influencers have earned the trust of their audience and are regarded as influential voices within the industry.

Fashion influencers have played a crucial role in challenging the long-standing beauty standards imposed by the fashion industry. They embrace diversity and actively advocate for body positivity, fostering inclusivity and self-acceptance. By promoting a more inclusive representation of diverse body types, ethnicities, and genders, these influencers have significantly impacted the fashion landscape, leading to a greater diversity of styles. Through showcasing their unique fashion choices and celebrating individuality, fashion influencers empower individuals to embrace their own identities and express themselves through fashion.

Moreover, fashion influencers have disrupted conventional advertising methods by forging direct and personal connections between brands and consumers. Leveraging their extensive online reach and engaged audiences, influencers have become valuable partners for fashion brands, enabling effective product promotion and facilitating connections with target demographics. Collaborating with influencers allows brands to leverage their influence and credibility to reach a wider audience, thereby driving sales and enhancing brand awareness. This symbiotic relationship has given rise to influencer marketing, which has become an integral component of the fashion industry.

Fashion influencers are at the forefront of the latest trends and often serve as trendsetters themselves. Their unique sense of style and creative content act as a constant source of inspiration for their followers, significantly influencing their purchasing decisions. Whether they are attending fashion weeks, curating lookbooks, or sharing daily outfit posts, fashion influencers consistently push boundaries and experiment with new styles. They have also wholeheartedly embraced sustainability and ethical practices, promoting responsible consumption and encouraging their followers to make conscious fashion choices.

Furthermore, fashion influencers have successfully ventured into entrepreneurship, launching their own fashion lines, collaborating with established brands, and assuming various roles such as fashion consultants or creative directors. Their industry expertise and loyal following make them highly valuable assets in shaping fashion trends and driving innovation.

Fashion influencers have completely transformed the fashion industry by bridging the gap between brands and consumers, challenging norms, and inspiring individuals worldwide. Through their authenticity, inclusivity, and trendsetting abilities, they have revolutionized our perception and consumption of fashion. Looking ahead, it is evident that fashion influencers will continue to play a significant role in shaping the industry, advocating for change, and inspiring self-expression through style.

The quickest and easiest way to make a fashion mistake that instantly ages you is simply wearing the wrong colors.

Even if you're wearing an incredibly desirable outfit from a top Parisian fashion designer, if the color is not right for you, no amount of Chanel can save you. Instead of looking like a stylish icon such as Carrie Bradshaw, you'll resemble a less fashionable figure like Pat Butcher.

Whether you hide in too much black or wash out your skin tone with too many pastels, choosing the wrong color can make you look ten years older before you even have time to apply your lipstick.

Color analysis parties, which were popular in the 90s and attended by Bridget Jones's annoying Mum, are thankfully a thing of the past, along with Tupperware evenings and French knickers. However, knowing your best and, more importantly, worst colors is the most effective weapon in your wardrobe arsenal.

The right shades will give you a radiant glow comparable to the best celebrity facials, minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (yes, it's truly transformative), and eliminate dark under-eye circles, giving the illusion of a great night's sleep—a perk that seems wasted on the young.

On the other hand, if we wear colors that don't flatter us, we can look washed out, accentuate imperfections, lose the sparkle in our eyes, and appear so unwell that we could pass as extras in a remake of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video.

Contrary to popular belief, our "color seasons" don't change as we age, just like our skin undertone remains the same. If you were once classified as a "summer," you will always be one. However, the specific shades within that season that suit you best may vary, so it's definitely worth revisiting or consulting a color expert to ensure that those crucial first impressions make an impact. Fabrics hold a significant role in the vibrant world of fashion, breathing life into designs with their ability to enhance appearance, texture, and overall aesthetic appeal. The variety of fabrics available is as diverse as the designers who skillfully incorporate them into their collections.

Silk: Revered for its glossy sheen and luxurious texture, silk has been highly sought after for centuries. Derived from silkworm cocoons, it possesses a natural radiance that exudes elegance. Silk fabrics gracefully drape, making them ideal for flowing dresses, blouses, and scarves. Additionally, its breathability ensures comfort, making it a popular choice for warm-weather garments.

Cotton: Versatile and timeless, cotton has stood the test of time. Known for its softness and breathability, it is a staple in the fashion industry. Cotton can be woven into various textures, ranging from crisp poplin to cozy flannel. It finds extensive use in creating everyday essentials such as t-shirts, jeans, and summer dresses. Furthermore, its moisture-absorbing properties make it perfect for warmer climates.

Denim: Synonymous with effortless coolness, denim has transcended generations to become a timeless classic. This sturdy cotton fabric is woven in a twill pattern, giving it its distinctive diagonal ribbing. Denim's durability makes it a perfect choice for jeans, jackets, and skirts as it ages gracefully with wear, developing a unique patina over time. Its versatility allows it to be dressed up or down, making it an essential wardrobe item.

Wool: Derived from sheep's fleece, wool has been cherished for its exceptional warmth and insulation for centuries. This natural fiber is known for its softness, durability, and ability to wick away moisture. Wool is often associated with winter wear, including cozy sweaters, scarves, and outerwear. Its versatility in terms of weight and texture makes it suitable for both casual and formal attire.

Chiffon: Delicate, lightweight, and ethereal, chiffon embodies femininity with its sheer nature. It is typically crafted from silk or synthetic fibers like polyester. Chiffon's airy and transparent qualities make it a popular choice for flowing gowns, romantic blouses, and elegant scarves. Its weightlessness adds a touch of grace and elegance to any ensemble, making it a favorite for special occasions.

Velvet: Luxurious and sumptuous, velvet is associated with opulence and grandeur. It is woven with a dense pile, resulting in a soft, plush texture that catches the light beautifully. While traditionally made from silk, velvet is now also produced using synthetic fibers. This fabric exudes sophistication and glamour, making it well-suited for eveningwear, formal dresses, and accessories.

The world of fashion is an intricate tapestry woven with a captivating array of fabrics, each contributing its own distinctive characteristics to the designs we adore. From the opulence of silk to the durability of denim, every fabric finds its place in shaping the realm of style. Exploring and understanding the unique properties of different fabrics not only allows us to appreciate the artistry behind each garment but also empowers us to make informed choices when curating our own personal fashion stories. So, the next time you slip into your favorite outfit, take a moment to cherish the fabric that makes it truly extraordinary.
